Advisory: There have never been laws against homosexual activity in Vietnam. However, in May, 2002, state-run media labeled declared that homosexuality was a "social evil" on par with drug use and prostitution and proposed laws to allow the arrest of gay couples. A report by the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs said the number of gay couples is on the rise, though it offered no statistics. The government reported that homosexuals have infiltrated the tourism, restaurant and karaoke bar industries and that their "eccentric behavior" went hand in hand with prostitution, drug use and HIV/AIDS. However, hopeful signs are emerging as well: the Communist Youth Newspaper carried a story in November 2002 about homosexuality that stated "some people are born gay, just as some people are born left-handed." |

Vietnam has become a favorite destination for travelers to Southeast Asia. Picturesque, vibrant and youthful, it offers magnificent natural wonders, gorgeous beaches, ancient city lanes, addictive cuisine and a paradise of shopping bargains.
Vietnam is splashed with color, from verdant rice fields, hot pink lanterns and day-glo boutiques, to the increasing visibility of gays and lesbians adding their own special hues to Vietnam’s rainbow.
Vietnam is a place to have fun, but also a place to use your common sense since the gay world here is still largely in the shadows and, as a result, some prey on the vulnerability of gay tourists (see words of caution from Utopians in the coming pages).
Never-the-less, no one should miss a chance to encounter the amazingly friendly Vietnamese, to learn about their rich culture and enjoy their warm hospitality!

HO CHI MINH CITY/SAIGON -- area code (84-8)

Vietnam’s largest and most free-wheeling metropolis is also one of Asia’s major economic and cultural centers. Youthful, vibrant, and bursting with opportunities to dine, shop and be entertained, old Saigon has morphed into a phoenix of creative, cutting-edge combustion.
The population of Ho Chi Minh City is nearing 7 million (that's 280,000 Utopians).

- Eden Bar (mixed)
236 De Tham St, District 1 (Pham Ngu Lao area), 836-8154, email. A safe and friendly bar for gays, lesbians, and straights, with tropical decor and a peaceful ambiance. Pleasant and attentive staff. They offer a wide range of drinks including beer, wine and cocktails. An international menu features Vietnamese specialties along with pizza and pasta, burgers, sandwiches and more."
Comments from Utopians:
"Eden Bar, which has opened about 2 years ago, is a really great place for gays and lesbians. It is a safe and friendly bar with nice staff. They open from 6am and close late. It is a safe bar and nicer than many bars in Saigon." -- miamore, Jun 28, 2005
Comments from Utopians:
"GO2 at 187 De Tham St in Dist 1 seems to be pretty friendly. I'm talking about dancing area upstairs. I had no problems kissing girls there. Nothing fancy at this place, but if u wanna dance, it's pretty cool. Gets crowded around midnight-1am." -- variable_a, Jan 3, 2007
"Q-Bar (on the right side of the Opera House, front of Caravelle Hotel) is a hip place with very good music. Usually beautiful people go there when Lush closes because Q-bar closes later than most of the bars. Q-bar has a European touch because the owner is English and the DJ is French. The place is georgeous, like most trendybars in biggest fashion cities! Also, I went to Samsara with my Vietnamese girlfriend. The place seems to be nice, but actually it's a place for gay men. I kissed my girlfriend two times (and not a very naughty kiss, nothing impolite) and the manager came to say that girls can't kiss here! Just to let you gals know, you'll be welcome at the bar to drink and talk, nothing more..." -- JaneHoi, Dec 6, 2006

- America Discotheque
Windsor Hotel Tower, District 5.
Comments from Utopians:
"My favorite place when I really want to dance. The disco is huge, the biggest one in HCMC. The DJs are very good and all the waitress are so amusingly hoooooot! There is a dance floor in the middle and small tables all around. The place is really dedicated to dancing! The price is a little bit exepensive, but you really have a lot of space to move your body compared to the other discos. So many people there on Sat. There are also some private rooms that you can close like the compartiment on a train.
I was there with a girl and we kissed without any problem. The place closse at midnight, sometimes at 1am on Sat (you have to see how happy everybody is to continue to dance one more hour!). The music is more trance here than at other places." -- JaneHoi, Dec 6, 2006
- Ben Thanh
3/F 6 Mac Dinh Chi, District 1. After Sam Son Club closed, Ben Thanh became popular. Mon night from 8:30pm-11pm is the place for young local gays and lesbians to socialize (500+ people, with the majority being gay). No foreigners, almost no one above 25. Great Vietnamese pop music. Things go wild when the lights shut down for the last two love songs and the dance floor is a flickering sea of mobile phone LCDs. Lucky draw shortly before closing (you get the lottery ticket together with the entrance ticket).
Comments from Utopians:
"I really hate Apocalypse Now. It's just a discotheque with female prostitutes and foreign guys looking for them. So shady. It's a part of Vietnam which makes me so uncomfortable. The music is not very good, with terrible sound of helicopter blades and music from the movie, Apocalyspe Now. Such a bad taste!" -- JaneHoi, Dec 6, 2006

- Phuong Cac Café (coffee shop)
Bis Nam Ky Khoi Nghia 213, District 3, mobile: 9-327-484. This garden café has beautiful flowers and very nice decor. Music videos play on the TV. Prices are very reasonable. There is no other place in HCMC where you will meet more friendly local men and women (a few hundred) than on Sun morning between 9am and 12 noon when they gather here for breakfast. Foreigners are welcome, but the staff speaks no English and the menu is in Vietnamese only. Other days of the week, and also after noon on Sun, the café has few guests. Free motorbike parking at the entrance -- only room for 600 bikes only!
Comments from Utopians:
"You should try Bread and Butter at 40/24 Bui Vien (off Pham Ngu Lao). It's a mix of friendly teachers, the chef is a lesbian, the food is good and the beer cheap." -- sadie, Mar 8, 2006
