Advisory: On July 2, 2009, the Delhi High Court overturned a 148-year-old British colonial law proscribing homosexual intercourse as "carnal intercourse against the order of nature."

The court stated, "Indian constitutional law does not permit the statutory criminal law to be held captive by the popular misconceptions of who the LGBTs (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders) are. It cannot be forgotten that discrimination is antithesis of equality and that it is the recognition of equality which will foster the dignity of every individual."

General Information

India has an historic homosexual tradition. Surviving texts from as early as the 1500s mention the subject and sacred imagery depicts same-sex interaction between women. Both Muslim Nawabs and wealthy Hindus were recorded as having harems of young males. Tantric rituals are also known to have included homosexual acts.

Generally gays and men who enjoy the company of other men may be found in urban public places, such as bus/rail depots and facilities, gardens and parks, cinema balconys, etc.

Male-to-female transgenders and hijras (eunuchs) have widespread, yet ambivalent, visibility in many local communities.

India's newly emerging LGBT communities, along with its variegated sexual behaviors that defy easy categorization, provide substantiation of the diversity of human nature; a diversity that is more visible than ever as the social freedoms sweeping through Asia erode irrelevant strictures of British colonials and organized religion.

    • Sree Bala Cinema
On MG Rd, Eastfort. Across from the Saj Lucia Hotel and down about a block. Look for the petrol station and Sri Bala is the second building after that. Best times: during evening shows (but day shows see some action). Cruisiest area is the balcony seating. Weekend nights: unexpected and very hot activities can happen at the furthest back end of the external facility behind G/F of the cinema. Just pretend to go there to use the tap to wash your hand. The walls facing the open urinals could have activities going on. Also during the day. Be discreet as the older security guard can get irate.

        Comments from Utopians:

"The Sri Bala Cinema is still going strong. Both the 2:30pm and 6:30pm shows were very busy, the 6:30pm being more so. In the lobby you will find a ticket both. One window says "Balcony." A ticket for the balcony costs R$30.00 (about 75 cents US). Go to the the very back of the balcony and wait until the lights are off then the fun begins." -- jamesto, Apr 28, 2010

"If you visit Trivandrum don't miss going to Kovalam Beach, about 15km from the city. Lovely (very clean) and loads of nice restaurants, gift shops and Ayurvedic clinics. Best of all, are the loads of nice, friendly guys walking and playing on the beach. Some are hustlers, but most are just ready to chat. Prices are a bit high for taxis and rickshaws. Don't stay at Bakers Resort -- it is the pits. Plenty of nice rooms on the beach for as low as R$400/night. Upscale 5-star resorts are also around. Enjoy!" -- prema4luv, Sep 22, 2009
