Bars and Clubs

Seoul has more than a hundred gay bars spread around a handful of gay neighborhoods, but it is easiest to find the gay clubs in Itaewon, a foreigner-friendly enclave that seems to have people from every country on the planet wandering around along with many American and Korean soldiers (it's don't-ask-don't-tell heaven in this tiny 4-block square area). The gay area of Itaewon, nicknamed "Homo Hill", has seen an explosion of foreigner-friendly, upscale gay bars, located in a convenient and friendly environment. English and other foreign languages are spoken by most of the bar staff and customers in Itaewon.

There are also many small bars located in the center of Seoul in the Nagwon Dong neighborhood to the north and east of Topkol Park (Independence Park) which is on Jongno Avenue. They are generally quite small and hard to find, Korean style, with older customers who do not usually speak English. Also, after midnight, the exterior lights may be turned off and the front doors locked. Bars may still be open, but you will have to know how to find the side or back entrances if the front door is locked. The best way to explore Korean-style bars is to let a Korean friend take you and to get a business card for repeat visits. There are gays wandering around this area who may be helpful in directing you to the bars. Be aware that Korean-style bars are much more expensive than Itaewon's international-style bars as you will likely be served a compulsory snack as well as sharing drinks with the bar master and your bar mates. However, as this is common in Asia, many Utopians from the region will be interested to visit a traditional Korean gay bar, especially if they speak a little Korean and love a more mature crowd.

Other areas with some gay life are Apkujong, Kangnam, Myongdong, and Shinchon.

    • Almaz
136-6 Itaewon 1, Dong Young-San Gu (see map), Utopia Map, 3785-0834, 011-9256-7361, email. A beautifully designed gay chill-out bar in the thick of Itaewon's nightlife zone. From the Itaewon subway station, take exit #3 and walk straight ahead one block and make a right, then turn left at the next intersection. You'll see a sign for Almaz on the right side of this uphill lane about half a block up. Walk along the stone path to the entrance. From Hamilton Hotel, cross the street and make a left, then follow the same directions. Large picture windows open onto a pleasure garden of granite formations with charming rock pagodas below willowy trees. The former owner, who was looking to open a gay bar, beheld this snow-dusted garden and decided to open Almaz, which means "the treasure" in Arabic. The current owner, Micky, has built a wooden deck and furnished it with tables and chairs. Now it's quite likely the best place in Itaewon to enjoy the night air. The interior features cushy black leather sofas and decor in natural hues. The music is fresh and funky, with the volume kept at conversation-friendly levels. This comfortable and welcoming bar is a casual, cool space to chill. 용산구, 이태원 1동, 136-6

        Comments from Utopians:

"Hung out in Almaz for a bit last week. It's a really groovy spot, with a great atmosphere. The prices aren't overly cheap, but that's average for Itaewon (and the atmosphere is totally worth it). I was there at about 10:30 on a Sat night, and it wasn't too busy: a few tables with some guys, but I was the only one at the bar. Definitely a good chill out spot, and worth checking out. Really beautiful." -- cyrc_84, Sep 6, 2009

Owner, Paul, also runs Why Not?. Exceptional selection of fine wines, spirits, fresh juices, and quality coffees. Crowd is a combination of expats, tourists, and young locals. Comments from Utopians:

"No fear of discrimination regardless of race. You can ask the bartender, Billy, about other gay scene spots and he'll give you tips on what suits you. The owner is a veteran when it comes to hosting. It's pretty quiet at 8-ish (which suits me) but gets crowded starting midnight." -- PJack, Aug 1, 2010

      Bar BlissBar Bliss
72-32 Itaewon, Yongsan (see map), Utopia Map, 749-7738, email. From Itaewon subway station, take Exit #4 and walk ahead 30m to the public phone booth. Turn left and you'll see a sign for Bar Bliss. Go down the stairway to street level and Bar Bliss is on the right. Indoor patio with French windows, a colorful Asian lounge, an intimate bar surrounded by a stunning collection of art and an area for late night dancing and karaoke. Owner, Ted Park, is the long-time sage of Seoul's gay community. Ask him about Happy Hour specials and 70+ wines, cocktails and beer. Fri at 10pm is Drag Queen Bingo night! Fu is half a block down this lane, on the left side. You will see a small square red sign hung off of a parking garage that says Fu. Take the stairway at the back of this garage down to Fu. A sexy, elegant club with bar and lounge seating in three areas. The design is a modern take on an exotic Asian den, with red walls glowing in flickering candlelight and recessed lighting in alcoves filled with Asia-modern objet. Educated, well-dressed patrons. Though mostly Korean it is welcoming to foreigners. Very smoky though. 용산구, 이태원 1동, 130-4
    • Hanabi
See map. From the Hamilton Hotel, cross the street and keep walking with your back to the Hamilton quite a ways until you get to a major 3-way intersection where the road continues straight or goes right. There's a Kashmir Restaurant and a Buy the Way store on one corner, the Hye Sun Gallery and a Motel sign on the other. Hanabi is across the street between a Real Estate Office and the Hamilton Store. Go in the doorway between the buildings and take the steps upstairs to 2/F. Hanabi is on the left at the intersection. Friendly staff and nice place to chill out. Not much English spoken.

Against the wall opposite the bar is a long wall shelf with more stools. It is nicely decorated, with friendly bartenders. A good place for a drink for singles or couples, but not great for groups since there is no table seating.

Very nice staff who make conversation with everyone and seem to be having a genuinely good time. The club plays American pop remixes, techno and some house. Open late. Busiest between 12:30-2:30am. Highly recommended for visitors. Some lesbian patrons as well. 용산구 이태원 137-4

      Comments from Utopians:

"I had heard that Seoul's gay night life was not very exciting - how wrong! On a Fri night went to Queen at about midnight - massive fun, cute guys and fun music. Crossed the road to Why Not? at about 2am...which was even more fun. It's a very young, fun crowd. As a caucasian, I was very popular! Bar staff were very friendly, too. Finally, against my better judgement, I was dragged to Pulse disco around 5am...it was pumping, packed and very fun! Congratulations Seoul - hot guys and fun times, I love you! I'll be back as soon as I can!" -- gymtoy, Aug 27, 2010

"I can highly recommend Question bar in Itaewon, on the same street as Almaz, Utopia Map. When you get to Almaz continue up the incline for another 100m and you will find it on the right (same side as Almaz). The owner, Nine, and his barman, Jed, are very welcoming and funny guys who also perform impromptu dance routines for your pleasure. Better still are the prices, with a famous beer at W$4,000 (which is W$1,000 cheaper than any other bar I have been to). Whatever your tipple, they have it for a great price. It is VERY foreigner friendly. They will play your favourite music on request. Ten out of ten." -- byungdohsuh, Apr 24, 2010

"Went to Energy Factory a couple weeks ago and had a great time. The music was great, sexy bartenders, and the dance floor was packed full of people having a good time. A week later I was excited to bring two of my other friends to win a bet and show that there are some decent clubs in the area but was denied entry and told it was 'Koreans only'. The only difference this time was my friends were two black American guys. I have been in Korea for 4 years, and a lot has changed for the better, but it still has a long way to go before its nightlife will be comparable to other major cities around the world. I lost the bet...racism sucks. Especially in 2010." -- rayrrr, Feb 6, 2010

"The manager of Why Not has left that club and opened a new 2-floor gay club and bar called Energy Factory (EF for short), just down the street from Almaz at the corner there of those 2 streets. The place is on 2/F and 3/F of that corner building. 2/F is the club and 3/F is the bar/lounge area. The entry fee is W$10,000 on Fri and W$15,000 on Sat with 1 free drink. The owner speaks good English. Gay club music with some Korean pop and hard, deep, electro house. It was packed between 2-4am." -- Specter, Jan 24, 2010

"Checked out Question. It is up the hill from Almaz and across from a popular straight western bar called Pollie's Kettle and Lounge. It is on the right side, same as Almaz. It is a small black box bar with mostly bar seating but some tables and a sofa. The drink prices are a bit cheaper than other places depending on what you order. The owner and bartender both speak good English. The place had a graffiti style to it with the menu written on a large blackboard over the bar. The walls and floor are decorated with graffiti style art -- both painted and chalked. The owner and bartender are extremely friendly and attentive. The crowd is about half western and half Korean. Not a large place, but people still dance there: a great atmosphere." -- Specter, Sep 20, 2009

      JONGNO / NAGWON DONG

    • Barcode
Jongno, 3672-0940, email. Jongno-3 Ga Subway Station exit #3 or #8. Coming out of either exit, you can easily spot the Barcode sign, at the corner of intersection. The sign says 'membership club' but no membership is needed to enter. This friendly bar welcomes visitors from around the world. A nice, western style bar with a clean interior and good drink prices. The bar is L-shaped and there are also tables for groups of people. Owner and staff speak English very well and are pleased to fill you in on the gay scene. Reasonable prices on many kinds of wine, whiskey, beer, and cocktails. Locals are happy to mingle with foreigners and exchange stories and laughs. Patrons tend to be in their 20s and 30s.

        Comments from Utopians:

"Everyone was so friendly and talkative and great music, plus the most incredible Long Island Ice Teas I have ever had. Thanks!" -- Chichubby3rd, Jul 16, 2010

"In my opinion Barcode is the best bar on Jongno St, especially if you like Asian bears. Drinks were GREAT (STRONG), reasonably priced, and friendly staff and patrons! The music was great, but there is no dancing. One of my favorite places to go in Seoul." -- Gabrielinkr, Mar 5, 2010

"Went here for the first time a few weeks ago and had a great time with my friends and lots of local guys. One of the few places in Seoul where everyone is welcome. Great place to have a beer, cocktails and meet guys. The drinks are great, strong and reasonable. This bar has become my regular hangout. The guys are typically very easy-going and the staff very friendly. You'll see men in their 20s-40s. Fri and Sat are definitely the peak nights. You'll always find lots of Asian pandas and awesome bartenders." -- njbear1965, Feb 24, 2010
