Saunas and Fitness for Men

Due to police harassment, saunas in KL are no longer able to carry condoms or display safer sex educational information. When a similar "social order campaign" brought about the same result in neighboring Thailand, HIV infection rates among gay men jumped to nearly 30% in a few years. Please bring your own safety supplies with you and share them with those you meet. And, most importantly, properly dispose of any used materials to prevent further harassment.

      BRICKFIELDS / KL SENTRAL

Venues here are a short walk from the Sentral KL Monorail Station, and the Hilton and Le Meridien hotels.

    • Chakran
1/F 22A-B Jln Padang Belia, Brickfields, 012-345-7178. After exiting the Sentral KL Monorail Station or the Tun Sambathan Monorail Station, look for the YMCA. You will see a Seven-Eleven behind the YMCA, on Jln Padang Belia. Walk straight ahead on this road to shop #22 (past the Magnum, 4D Toto, and Restoran Yusof Ali). You will see a yellow shop with a huge orange signboard for Chakran (downstairs is a dental clinic). Use the side door to go upstairs. 1/F is reception, massage, body scrub, and showers. 2/F is the steam room, sauna, reading area, TV and resting room, and showers. 3/F has a beautiful rooftop garden with sheltered jacuzzi, plus day beds for resting and reading in a lush garden setting. Friendly staff and management keep up the high quality of this men's social club. Open from 2pm Mon-Thu, from noon Fri-Sun and public holidays. Closing is 11pm nightly.

        Comments from Utopians:

"This is a very nicely set up place with extremely clean facilities. The rooftop jacuzzi and relaxing area are just lovely, but the steep spiral staircase that leads to the rooftop needs to be very carefully negotiated on the way down, as it's wet and slippery. The crowd here are very young and gym fit, so i did get some attitude from those guys who paraded around posing but not after any action with anyone who wasn't gym fit and rippling with muscles. 99% Chinese crowd." -- bittern72, Nov 25, 2008

"Chakran is very good, but I think it is very hard for them to maintain. This time the towels given to me smelled. Some showers don't have clean curtains and it is so rude that guys abruptly peep through the curtains. I want some privacy, at least for bathing. Anyway it's the best buy for the money as they charge only R$20." -- sexguru, Oct 9, 2008

"Chakran's rooftop natural garden and jacuzzi has become my frequent haunt for relaxing and meeting people. I enjoy the mixed race, normal looking, decent guys and frequent tourists. I found an easier way to get here, close to the Tun Sambathan monorail. Right behind the YMCA is a 7-11 on Jln Padang Belia. Walk this road till shop no. 22 with a big orange signboard. Downstairs is a klinik gigi (dentist). Consistently clean, magazines and books to read. Free coffee (but no soft drinks or food). Managers are friendly." -- EzyMan, Jul 24, 2008

"Chakran is one of the cleanest spas in town (except for occasional customers throwing towels on the floor). They get mostly professional customers." -- Benjamin, Mar 22, 2008

"Nice place. Clean, friendly and feels like home. However, no private rooms. The resting room next to the TV room is very open. The window blinds are too open, too. Should have more shower areas (either single shower or shared showers would be wonderful). Keep up the good job!" -- hothotmy, Jan 27, 2008

    • Senses
2/F 27-2 & 3 Jln Tun Sambanthan 4, 2260-6018. As you exit the tun Sambantham Monorail Station, turn left and walk down the covered walkway next to the school yard. Keep going forward, across the intersection. and then look for the Sentral Bistro restaurant in the first shophouse on your left. Right next to it is a stairwell with a sign overhead saying Blind TMC Centre. Go up to 2/F to the unmarked glass door entrance of Senses. Here you will find reception, massage rooms and, behind a secure door, lockers. 3/F has a Net area with three PC stations, an aircon dark room, TV lounge, steam room, dry sauna, two shower areas and a popular, dim "rain room" (there's always some humming in the rain here). Be careful of slippery wet floors and also changes in levels in the dark areas which are not clearly lit! Popular and friendly. Clean and well-managed. The friendly crowd is more mature (30s and over) with plenty of uncles and chubs (nice, big towels). Same owners as Sentral.

        Comments from Utopians:

"WOW this was paradise. Lots of middle aged and older Chinese guys (80% Chinese, 20% Malay and others) and some younger guys who were all there for fun. No attitude and everyone just stopped pretending why they were there. Good crowd there when I went on Fri, Sat and Sun (yeah, I really did enjoy it) and lots to choose from. The aircon dark room and the rain shower room were lots of fun. The rain shower room especially, as once you are in there, anything is game and everyone is game! Best showers in any sauna i've been to both here and overseas: plenty of hot water, shower gel, etc. Provision of mouth rinse was a nice touch. I found the place spotless and the attendants came around and cleaned regularly. Nice TV area to chill out, good sized sauna and steam room. Three computer terminals with Net access. Sweets and tea provided on the house! Fluffy white towels and good sized lockers. What else could you ask for? Well maybe a jacuzzi! hahaha" -- bittern72, Nov 25, 2008

"So dirty and only the Chinese chub crowd was there when I went." -- sexguru, Oct 9, 2008

"Kind of difficult to find it as it has no sign hanging outsite. I called up to enquire and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It's clean and interesting. Especially the rain room." -- hothotmy, Jan 29, 2008

"The reception area is good. Sauna areas are not bad but could be improved because not much privacy. Lights in steam room and sauna should be darker. The crowd was chubby and mature." -- ilubbzz, Jan 4, 2008

    • Sentral Massage
1/F Jln Thamby Pillai, Brickfields (next to Super Blind massage), 2260-1018. As you exit the Sentral KL Monorail Station, turn left and then left again immediately and walk 2 blocks behind the station. Turn right and walk along the restaurants and shops to the stairway up to Sentral Massage. Facilities include coffee area, satellite TV room, sauna, dim relaxing space and more. Very popular with masculine, mature men, chubs, and their admirers. A friendly mix of races. Skilled blind masseurs on hand. Open daily 11am-11pm.

        Comments from Utopians:

"Despite an upgrade, most showers and don't work very well. It's smelly and dirty and people still smoke everywere. Naked guys walking around with lit cigarettes. Never again!" -- lustysnake, Feb 10, 2008

"So sorry to say that Sentral sauna is going down. There is serious hygienic concern there. A big effort is needed to re-organize the place to keep up the standards. Hopefully things will get better." -- hothotmy, Jan 29, 2008

      Comments from Utopians:

"Urut Traditional PB (see under Massage) so far has the best steam room I came across. Hot enough. The place is small, but clean, and sometimes one of the better maintained ones. The hot showers are always hot. Towels are clean, too. The place may be a bit boringly decorated but the patrons are quite gentle and decent. Mostly uncles/chubs if that's what you're looking for. Best is that it doesn't get jammed like at Sentral/Senses, which gives you more peace and relaxation with occasional handsome uncles staring at you." -- Benjamin , Jun 12, 2008

BUKIT BINTANG / KL CITY CENTER

Bukit Bintang is jammed with bustling shopping centers, restaurants and many of KL's popular hotels which are right in the center of the action. The neighborhood is easy to navigate using our Utopia map:

      Day Thermos
G/F 40-6A Jln Sultan Ismail (see map, diagonally opposite Blue Boy disco), Bukit Bintang, 2144-9648, email. Facing the Grand Millenium Hotel, go down the alley on the left side of the hotel. In front of you, you will see a row of shophouses in front of you and Day Thermos' signboard visible just to the right. This world-class men's facility, right in the heart of the tourist area, has it all! Fantastic security and great decor (even the toilets are beautifully detailed). 1/F has lockers large enough to store your backpack; a beautiful TV lounge, bar and garden atrium. 2/F has rain showers, both public and private; steam maze and dry sauna, small gym and dark room with maze. 3/F has private cabins, relaxing lounge and massage rooms. Crowd is all ages and races. Very foreign-friendly (big sized towels!) due to the great location and multiple languages spoken by the staff. Utopia Member Discount

        Comments from Utopians:

"Much better now. Bigger, clean and the dark steam room is very happening. For those staying around Bukit Bintang, Day Thermos is the good choice." -- cosmo30, Oct 13, 2008

"I recently went to the new Day Thermos. Man, it was very beautiful. With a new dark room and the beautiful lobby." -- foxmulder, Aug 30, 2008

"Day Thermos has expanded its operations. The entrance is now on the ground floor and it looks really nice. Entry fee is R$28." -- yinghuantang, Jul 26, 2008

      CHERAS

    • Kakiku
2/F 109-2, Jln Cerapu 1 (off Jln Cheras at Sang Kee Restaurant), 9282-5303, email. From city center, go to "Jln Cheras 3 1/2 Miles" and pass by the tall Menara PGRM building. Stay on Jln Cheras another 100m, past the Petronas petrol station, and turn left onto Jln Cerapu 1 (there's a well-known restaurant, Sang Kee, with a red rocket at this corner). Take the next right turn within the shophouses and Kakiku is in the building on your left. You can see some stylized black footprints on the windows of 2/F. Go up the stairway. Gay-owned and very well-managed men's complex. Very large and clean facilities include steam, dry sauna, jacuzzi, broadband Net, mini-cinema, TV lounge, and café bar. 1/F cruise space and foam room opens about 7pm. Crowd is local, mixed races, in their 20s-40s. Open Mon-Fri 5pm-midnight; Sat, Sun and public holidays 2pm-midnight. Utopia Member Discount

        Comments from Utopians:

"Majority Chinese with a fair number of Malays. Clean, good Net access. Nice jacuzzi. Mix of open and closed showers. Not much action before evening and most of this occurs in the steam room and downstairs dark room." -- aabbee, Oct 19, 2008

"Difficult to find, but I had great time. The place was very nice and staff were especially helpful. They even drew maps of other gay venues in the area for me. Recommended." -- nezz, Aug 10, 2008

"Kakiku has added a jacuzzi where you can be naked together with other guys. As usual on weekend nites, foam parties and special functions are on. Try the foam party if you want to be wet with a group of nice guys! Try the 'special function' if you are shy as it was quite dim inside. One of the hotspots in KL nowadays. Catch it up!" -- younggun80, Feb 15, 2008

"Kakiku continues to reinvent itself, adding a huge jacuzzi and giving iteself a general facelift. The owners continue to invest and keep the customers happy. The weekend usually starts with a great crazy wet naked foam party at 8pm, followed by a dry, naked mad dark room cruise at 9pm. The staff there announce and lead on. Whether you like it wet or dry or wild or mad, gosh they have it. The cleanliness and the hygiene of the place is an attraction to me." -- alexbam, Jan 12, 2008

      CHOW KIT

    • OTOT²
1/F 7a Jln Ipoh Kechil (off Jln Raja Laut), 4044-3369, email. Only a couple blocks away form the Chow Kit Monorail Station, Star PWTC LRT station, and KTM Putra commuter train station. The nearest taxi landmark is the Grand Central Hotel. Walk up the lane, with the hotel entrance on your left, to the last block of shophouses on your right. Just past the karaoke pub is the stairway up to Otot². If you hit the stairway to PT Foundation, Malaysia's GLBT AIDS outreach offices (marked with a large pink triangle), then you've gone just a bit too far. The name means "muscles" in Malay and is also a naughty play on the Malay notion that something else is a muscle, too. The decor and design is beautiful (it retains a bit of the comfort and charm of the original Babylon in Bangkok). Large gym with modern equipment, aerobics room (yoga and body pump classes are also on offer), coffee area, satellite TV room and lockers are on the reception level. 2/F (which is open to the sky) has seating areas with lots of potted shrubs, a beautiful and private jacuzzi area, showers, a steam room and a large, dark resting area. Open 5pm-midnight weekdays and 1pm-midnight weekends and holidays. All ages and races make this a truly international men's facility.

        Comments from Utopians:

"Very good mix of races. Great eye-candy. Lots of action zones. Open showers only, with abundant peep holes. Water heavily chlorinated. Excellent rooftop garden." -- aabbee, Oct 19, 2008

"This sauna is very well thought out, tasteful and has very friendly staff. Mixed clientelle and all very approachable. Free tea and coffee, a large gym and free Internet. I visited about 4 saunas in KL and found this one to be the best." -- nezz, Aug 10, 2008

"Go to OTOT² on a Sun after 7pm. You will meet nice people there. Try the various rooms before you decide what you prefer. If you are new, you can let others take the initiative. The dark mazes are best for that, or the back part of the steam room. If only management could enforce a no smoking rule in most areas (except outdoors), but definitely in corridor areas, staircases and lockers. A guy got burned yesterday and was not amused." -- lustysnake, Jun 1, 2008

"OTOT² is a fabulous spot - with plenty of clean eye candy in the imaginatively set out showers. They have a very nice rooftop garden area. The two days I was there the staff produced free tea and coffee at 9pm. Mixed crowd, tourists seemed to be welcome." -- wtraveller, Jan 14, 2008

      JALAN IPOH

    • Mclub Gym
No. 344 & 346 Jln Ipoh 2 ½ Miles (entry is in the alley behind the shophouses), 4043-8088, email. About 15 minutes walk from the Titiwangsa Monorail Station along Jln Ipoh. Look for a Shell petrol station on your left, followed by an Indian Temple and then an overhead bridge. Take the next alley on your left to the rear of the shophouses. There is an empty lot for parking. Look for the rear entrance to Mclub and climb up one flight of stairs. There is a café for casual dining and an Internet area. G/F has lockers and shower area, steam room, gym, dry sauna, and an outdoor garden. 1/F, which is also called the Japanese floor, has private rooms, Japanese bathing area, and a dark room retreat. 2/F offers a reading area, more lockers and shower area, private rooms, and a TV lounge. 3/F offers yet more lockers and shower area and a double-decker shared room. At the very top is a roof garden. Open 24-hours. Crowd is a mix of ages and races, but more mature. Utopia Member Discount

        Comments from Utopians:

"Broken down, dilapidated facilities and a management that does not seem to care about its customers. Dirty toilets with broken cisterns, leaky hoses, many showers without hot water, soap dispensers empty, plywood fascias coming away from the wall, room lights not working, and a general air of unkemptness! The sauna has a door that no longer closes to keep the heat in and the steam room is supposed to be switched on at 6pm (even though the place claims to operate a 24-hour service). However, on this occasion I was particularly upset because after waiting nearly five hours for the steam room to be activated I was told that it was not working! Surely if a facility is broken at least tell customers of the fact. I was so disgusted on my latest visit that I passed back my membership card. They are offering far below the standard that should be expected of a gym club in 21st century Malaysia!" -- pakcikt, Sep 2, 2008

"I last visited this rabbit warren more than two years ago and, despite a couple of tacky changes, the place looks caught in a time warp. None of the showers worked properly, soap containers were broken and empty, the toilets and the floors in the shower rooms were filthy and dangerously slippery. If you do go, bring a torch to help locate and open/close your locker as the place looked like another darkroom." -- PC, Aug 6, 2008

OLD KLANG ROAD / TAMAN DESA

    • Mandi Manda
31 Jln 109E, Desa Business Park, Taman Desa, 7980-3900. Turn into Taman Desa and immediately you will see a bomba (fire station). Turn left immediately after the bomba. Look for two panel glass doors with long wooden handles (pull to open, not push) in the center of the 2nd block of shophouses. No sign. To ensure privacy the owners have chosen a quiet corner overlooking garden greenery in Taman Desa. "Mandi beramai ramai sambil bersuka ria" means bathing together while enjoying pleasures -- aptly describing this world-class men's spa. Three levels of sleek modern spaces are run by friendly staff and populated by men who share the same passions and tastes in life. Facilities include security-monitored lockers, dry sauna, huge steam room maze, rain showers, dry and wet toilets, TV/Net lounge, private cabins that lead to a maze and group activity room, and café.

        Comments from Utopians:

"Almost exclusively Chinese. Nude party is a great idea but hardly any action and everyone is too shy. Private and double showers. Very clean, but lots of climbing to do." -- aabbee, Oct 19, 2008

"Mandi Manda, from my experience, has Malay twinks in the dark rooms." -- Fip, May 2, 2008

      PETALING JAYA / KELANA JAYA

    • Steam Works Sweat Spa
2/F, 29-B Jln SS 24/11, Taman Megah, 016-209-3935, 012-344-3318. Along the same stretch as RHB Bank, directly opposite the Futsal Centre. About 15 minutes walk from the Kelana Jaya Putra Station. Steam, sauna, Japanese style pool. Guys there are shy earlier, but wild later into the evening. The counter staff is helpful in providing gay scene info. Utopia Member Discount
