KUALA LUMPUR -- area code (60-3)

Popular Spots

Bukit Bintang is jammed with bustling shopping centers, restaurants and many of KL's popular hotels which are right in the center of the action. The neighborhood is easy to navigate using our Utopia map:

Bars and Clubs

BUKIT BINTANG / KL CITY CENTER

    • Frangipani (mixed)
25 Changkat Bukit Bintang (see map), 2144-3001, 2145-3001, email. Friday is gay night at this world-class club. Downstairs is perhaps KL's most beautiful restaurant - a hidden oasis with seating around a large reflecting pool - serving modern French cuisine in a setting straight out of Wallpaper magazine. Upstairs on 2/F is a trend-setting cocktail habitat with two bars, cozy couch seating, chill-out area, and a small dance floor. The DJ spins "happy music" and latin beats late into the night. Local celebs and bodies beautiful inhabit this planet. Closed Mon.

        Comments from Utopians:

"Still hot for the gay crowd on Fri nights. Restaurant downstairs and a great bar with quite a beautiful gay crowd." -- WildWaters, Oct 28, 2008

      Comments from Utopians:

"I would like to recommend a pub behind Jln Alor. Not exactly a place of cruising coz customers are regulars but all are welcomed by the pub's owner, Barbara, a kind and open-minded lady. The place is not big, situated upstairs of Summer Boat Restaurant. Bar seating for 5 people, two bar tables, eight small tables and a pool table. Nice atmosphere and music. I go there at least 2-3 times a week to relax and chat with friends. Let's make it a new place for PLUs." -- cool_kk213, Feb 21, 2007

      CHERAS

      La Bear Café (mixed)
8-0-1 Queen Ave, Jln Bayam, 9205-5727, 012-623-8881. Not a bear bar at all, but rather a combo of chill-out space in front and karaoke in the main room. Cocktails and snacks. Activities include karaoke competitions, drag contests, and hosting special events (perfect set-up for a private party). Handsome staff. Crowd is about 70% gay, 18-40yo locals.

      PALACE Bar (mixed)
28-G, Block N, Jln 3/93A, Warisan Cityview, Batu 2 1/2 Jalan Cheras (opposite Jaya Jusco Maluri and next to CALTEX), 9205-6280, 012-432-5013, email. Mostly gay crowd here at this contemporary, friendly and relaxed bar, lounge and karaoke. Clean, open space with great sightlines for making eye contact. Crowd is mainly young, local professionals. Some lesbians as well. Large song list of Chinese, English, Malay, Japanese, Thai and more. Regular events on public holidays, special occasions and festivities. Utopia Member Discount

Cabarets

BUKIT BINTANG / KL CITY CENTER

    • Funteque
On top of The Ship Bukit Bintang. Drag show on Sat.

Discos

BUKIT BINTANG / KL CITY CENTER

    • Blue Boy
50 Jln Sultan Ismail (see map), 242-1067, email. Malaysia's oldest gay club, rolling on past its 2nd decade now. Small, friendly neighborhood place that gets completely packed on Fri and Sat nights. Main room has a bar and dance area. Second room has table seating. Decor is basically dim lighting. Crowd is mostly young Malay and their matt saleh (white) admirers. The MBs are rather obvious and to be avoided. After all, why dish out with all the complimentary treats on hand?

        Comments from Utopians:

"Went to Blue Boy on Fri night. The music was really great, I couldn't stop dancing all night (my vote for the best DJs in Asia). The place was totally packed. There were two shows - 12:45am and 2am (cool show). I really liked it." -- nate_bkk, Jan 6, 2008

"I have been to Blueboy on Sun night and there was a great fun among young and old. The place is big enough and it attracts a lot of students as young as 19. The music was hot and it rocked the whole place." -- j799799, Dec 30, 2007

"I went to Blueboy last Sat after midnight. A lot of people. A mix of races; caucasian, black, Malay, etc. Saw many nice guys there. Around 2am was a dance show and it was quite interesting. Although not a clean place, it is really not that bad. The entrance fees was R$20 and included a free drink. But I think one drink is not enough, if they want people to stay a bit longer." -- gold_exp, Nov 3, 2007

"I went to Blueboy last Fri and I really had fun. Loads of people say that it's a sleazy place and stuff, but I really think it's fun, not dirty. People are friendly, not snobish." -- sportguy, Sep 8, 2007

"I have been to a few PLU spots in KL but i still find that the best spot is BlueBoy discotheque. I Know that the place has its ups and downs, but there is no comparing to its atmosphere. They have better drag shows these days. They could improve a little on the music side and be open to a new interior. Still 'BB' rocks." -- julia24, Aug 24, 2007

    • La Queen
5 Jln P. Ramlee (at the corner of Jln Sultan Ishmail), 017-325-9985, email. PLU-owned and operated disco with two floors of fun in the center of Kuala Lumpur. Young crowd.

        Comments from Utopians:

"Large dance floor packed with young Chinese and Malay guys. The music was not quite impressive (for me) - it could shake my ass 6 out of 10 songs - but still a nice place to hang around." -- nate_bkk, Jan 6, 2008

    • MarketPlace
4A, Lorong Yap Kwan Seng, 2166-0752. Popular gay dance club on Sat nights. Cool view of Petronas Towers. Hot house beats. Rooftop chill-out space.

        Comments from Utopians:

"I went to MarketPlace on a recent Sat. It was fully packed! Couldn't even dance on the dance floor coz there's no space at all! If you like check people out, that's the place. Full with guys from 20-30s. But, personally, I still like La Queen." -- younggun80, Sep 7, 2008

"Marketplace on Jln Yap Kwan Seng has amazing Sat nights and hosts the pulsating Prince World Parties. If you like the hot club scene with a 20-to-30-something crowd, this is the place. Expansive area to hang out with a nice al fresco rooftop bar. Music is great and dance floor is appropriately packed. If you're gonna be current in the scene, this IS the place to be." -- WildWaters, Oct 28, 2008

    • Oblique
        Jln PJ Ramlee, 012-203-4636.

        Comments from Utopians:

"Oblique has Raunchy Saturday events with heavenly bodies on stage most times. Great parties." -- WildWaters, Oct 28, 2008

Right behind Taman Maluri Jaya Jusco and opposite Sai Cek Kong coffee shop. One of the shops further down from AmBank. Open concept karaoke, mainly for chubs and chasers, but all are welcome. A lot of updated songs to sing. But don't worry if you don't like to sing, you can hang out here and chit chat with the staff and the friendly customers. Yummy finger food.
